Understanding WORK (part 5) - Fire your greedy boss.
July 31, 2007 05:05 AM PDT
Fire your greedy boss. This is not a punt for bosses nor am I in any way going to imply that all bosses are good. What I want to do is give you a more empowering way of dealing with your work situation, and then I am going to show you how to really fire your boss in a way that empowers both of you. Whether we like it or not at least 90% if not more of us earn our income because someone had an idea for a business, then backed that idea with investments in time and skills and money. They risked their future on the success of their idea and because they had the courage to act on their idea they created an employment opportunity for you. The first thing that you must realise is that by feeling that you are working for a "greedy boss" you have put yourself into a position of dependency. You are saying that you have to put up with this "bad" situation. This makes you just one level above a slave (a slave doesn't get paid). This feeling often translates into resentment towards your job and this resentment causes poor performance which you tend to justify by stating that "if that's all they think I'm worth then that's all they're going to get" Just realise that until you do more than you are paid to do you do not deserve to be paid more for what you do. Now of course you can fire your "greedy boss" but unless you go out and be a "boss" that is be self employed, you are just going to have to try to sell your services to the next "greedy boss", and unless you change your attitude you will just repeat the pattern. So here's how to "fire" your boss in a way that benefits you. Step 1. Take ownership of your job. Realise that you are your own boss. You are the head of your corporation. Imagine that you were a contractor and would only be paid once the job was done, and done well. Step 2. Do your job so well that you don't need to be bossed. Just think about it, when do have "trouble" with the boss? When the job is done badly, right. Set your own performance standard that lets you feel proud of the work that you have done. Step 3. Don't wait to be told what to do. If you know what to do then get on and do it. If you don't know what to do go and find out. Standing around doing nothing is a sure way to get "bossed" and getting "bossed" is a sure way to feel resentful. Step 4. Fire you boss by making the boss your partner. Find out what your boss wants to achieve, ask how you can help. If you can learn what your boss knows then you can also become a boss. It has been said "Do I not destroy my enemies by making them my friends?" Step 5. Learn as much as you can about the business you are in. Strive to improve the value of your services. Strive to add value to your place of work. Become a person worthy of promotion. Become a person worthy of praise. Realise that you can get just about everything you want by helping enough people get what they want. The only way to get anything that you want is to help other people get what they want. |
